Experts in Malta to discuss terrorism

UN Office of Drugs and Crime, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe hold workshop on dealing with kidnapping for ransom

Experts from across the Mediterranean region and beyond have met in Malta for a two-day workshop on preventing and dealing with kidnapping for ransom, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.

The workshop, which ends tomorrow, is organized jointly by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) under the auspices of the Government of Malta and with the support of Liechtenstein, Spain and Switzerland.

The workshop will give participants the opportunity to discuss ways of dealing with such situations, particularly in light of recent events in the Middle East involving the Islamic State.

The international frameworks and provide recommendations related to kidnapping and hostage-taking will also be discussed.

Jonathan Galea, Director General of global issues in ministry of foreign affairs, welcomed participants to Malta, a place, he said, where cultures have traditionally met and swapped ideas.
