‘Maltese women need to make their voices heard’ – Labour MP

Marlene Farrugia says that several Maltese women tend to look suspiciously at those few women who make their voices heard in public.

Maltese women are not vociferous enough in the public scene, Labour MP Marlene Farrugia said.

“Many Maltese women look suspiciously at women who do make their voices heard, as though they’re breaking some sort of phenomenon,” Farrugia said during her parliamentary adjournment. “Women should support other women who speak up and if they disagree with what they, then they shouldn’t be afraid to debate them. ”

In particular, she pointed out that only a few women speak up on issues regarding the environment, even though the majority of mothers would like their children to grow up in a green environment.

She said that the country’s highest institutions, including Parliament, are heavily male-dominated.

“This lack of equal representation between the sexes leads to the passing of policies that reflect a lack of sensitivity, long-term planning and emotional intelligence,” she said. “These are issues that women can help out with, not because they are better than men but because they are different than them.”

However, she warned against the introduction of gender quotas as “positive discrimination is still discrimination”.
