Huge gender imbalance in patients admitted to Mount Carmel

1,304 patients administered to Mount Carmel in 2013, more than in any of the three previous years

Figures tabled in Parliament by Health Minister Konrad Mizzi show that around 70% of the 1,304 patients that were admitted to Mount Carmel in 2013 were males.

The figures indicate a trend- 70% of the patients admitted to Mount Carmel in 2013 were males, 69% were males in 2011, and 74% were males in 2010.

The data was requested by Opposition MP Mario Galea, the PN’s spokesperson for animal rights and an advocate of rights to mental health patients who has gone public about his battle against depression.

At 1,304 people, more patients were administered to Mount Carmel in 2013 than in any of the three previous years- 1,246 patients in 2012, 1,278 patients in 2011, and 1,135 patients in 2010.
