Student organisation SDM, the Maltese Christian Democrat group, has launched a campaign to tackle bullying in post-secondary and tertiary educational institutions.

'Draw the Line' will run until March and will involve consultation with students and the authorities, as well as a social media campaign. When the three months are up, SDM will present the government with a policy paper that will include proposals on how to clamp down on bullying.

"Bullying is tackled extensively in primary and secondary schools, but in our current system it's as though the problem evaporates as soon as the students graduate," SDM president Ian Zahra told a press conference outside Parliament.

Noting that a recent study revealed that 43% of English students get bullied at school, Zahra claimed that the figure is probably similar in Malta.

"From our experience working with students, bullying is a serious problem in Malta," he said.
