Things go boom in the Gotham night in this new trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, sequel to 2008's billion-raking Batman sequel The Dark Knight.

Emerging from a self-imposed exile eight years after the near-cataclysmic events of the previous film, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) finds his native Gotham City under threat once again.

This time, the villain of the piece is the physically formidable Bane (Tom Hardy) - a vindictive, genetically modified super soldier who intends to lead a revolt against Gotham's elite.

Joining the fray is Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) - a leather-clad and physically able "associate" of Bruce Wayne's whom we know as Catwoman.

Kyle has no sympathy for the financial ruling classes of Gotham City, but Bane's terrorist invasion of the city leads her to form an unwitting alliance with the city's brooding avenger.

The Dark Knight Rises will premiere in the US, UK and Canada on July 20. It remains to be seen whether Malta will receive the film concurrently with the US and Europe, as has become the trend with large-scale blockbusters of its ilk.
