Photography, fun run, walks, cycling and talks are among the activities planned for Sunday 22 September as Malta joins the European Union in marking Car Free Day.

An activity which every year is increasingly attracting participants, Car Free Day is an activity that aims at increasing awareness on the sensible use of cars and reducing pollution.

Addressing a press conference in Mdina, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said Car Free Day was one of a number of activities being organised by the government in favour of better air quality.

Urging the public to attend, the environment minister said the "true protagonists were the participants" with activities being organised by 10 local councils and five NGOs.

The local councils - Santa Venera, Dingli, Kalkara, Mellieha, Ghajnsielem, Lija, Floriana, Fgura, Attard and Birgu - were awarded €2,000 each to help fund the activities.

On Car Free Day, Transport Malta will also be organising a bicycle rodeo, leaving from Wied il-Ghajna. Kids will be given gifts and information on air quality.
