Man, 60, who defiled minor for four years jailed for three years

A 60-year-old man was sent to three years in prison after admitting to defiling the daughter of his friends. The man's identity could not be made public to protect the identity of the girl.

He also admitted to violent indecent assault.

It was the girl who informed her parents, and subsequently the police, what the man had done to her. The defilement went on for four years, until she turned 16. Police Inspector Sylvana Briffa told the courts how the man used to touch her private parts at her parents' home. At the time she was 12.

The sexual activities continued when she used to go to his house to help him with the cleaning.

The man admitted to the police that he had engaged in sexual activities with the girl, while watching pornography. He added that he gave the girl cigarettes and alcohol and insisted he was sorry for what he had done.

According to his defence lawyer Joseph Ellis, the man had showed his remorse and wanted to pay for his actions. Noting that the accused had filed an early guilty plea and also cooperated with the police during the course of the investigations, Magistrate Gabriella Vella sentenced him to three years in prison and ordered him not to approach the victim for three years after leaving the prisons.
