A 63-year-old cyclist from Valletta is in stable condition after he was grievously injured in a traffic accident this morning.

The incident occurred at around 7.50am on Mdina Road, Zebbug. Informed sources explained that the cyclist - identified as Anthony Micallef - was going around the roundabout and cycling towards Qormi, when he was hit by a Toyota pick-up truck driven by 77-year-old Carmelo Galea from Zebbug.

Galea told investigators that he could not see the cyclist before accidentally running him over with his vehicle. The 63-year-old cyclist ended up  trapped under the car.

Micallef was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where he was certified to be suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said. The man's condition has since improved and his injuries are not critical. Police also said that the man is now in a stable condition.

An inquiry is being held while police investigations are ongoing. Duty Magistrate Doreen Clarke has appointed Mario Buttigieg, Richard Aquilina, Joseph Zammit and Dr Mario Scerri as court experts, while Police Inspector Kylie Borg is leading the investigations.
