[WATCH] ALPA president Dominic Azzopardi - Reporter

'Air Malta's problem is not downsizing the fleet… if we don’t increase the fleet, Air Malta goes bankrupt' - ALPA president Dominic Azzopardi.

The president of the Air Malta pilots’ union Dominic Azzopardi has defended his actions to threaten strike action during the airline’s restructuring, saying the airline was losing a lot of money unnecessarily.

Azzopardi admitted that a surplus of pilots existed in Air Malta, but qualified this by saying that some 20 pilots this summer managed to get jobs overseas while on unpaid leave from Air Malta.

“The company’s problem is not downsizing the fleet… that’s Europe’s demands. But if we don’t increase the fleet, Air Malta goes bankrupt,” Azzopardi said.

The outspoken pilot also said he told British chief executive Peter Davies, whose extraordinary €500,000 salary was lambasted by critics, that if he managed in bringing about a turnaround for the airline his salary would be truly justified.

“I told him that nine months ago… it will be the public to decide whether his salary was justified.”

Incredible where this guy dreams up his follies. Up in the clouds, maybe. Doubt it if he would like anyone telling him how to fly an aircraft ...or if he is worth his salary at that...
