PM says future of manufacturing industry lies in technology investment
Lawrence Gonzi sits for a 15-minute question and answer session with ArrowPharm workers.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that the future of the manufacturing industry in Malta lay in the continuous investment in modern technology and staying ahead in research and development.
As part of the PN electoral campaign, Gonzi this morning visited the new laboratories at ArrowPharm in Hal Far and then sat for a 15-minute question and answer session with the pharmaceutical company's employees.
The press was allowed to cover only the first two questions.
"No country can move forward without a strong manufacturing sector. But when considering Malta's obstacles being an island, the results we obtained in this sector were no mean feat," Gonzi said.
He said that Malta was at a disadvantage when compared to other countries: "Our only means of delivery to other countries is either by sea or air. This is a major handicap which we sometimes tend to forget."
Gonzi said that it was for this reason that Malta tried to offer something different from others to attract foreign companies. "Our continuous investment in technology, engineering and research and development are all measures as to make Malta more attractive in terms of competitiveness," he said.
The Prime Minister added that the key was to continually invest in modern technology and remain competitive in innovation.
