Turbine 2 at the older Delimara Power Station has tripped, causing a widespread power cut.

In a statement, Enemalta insisted that the "cause of the trip is currently being investigated and has nothing to do with the new Delimara extension coming online yesterday evening".

The localities affected were Buġibba, Qawra, Burmarrad, Marsascala, Xagħjra, Żabbar, Marsaxlokk, Attard, Birkirkara, Msida, Mosta, Gozo, Mellieħa, Gżira, Mġarr, Gudja and Tarxien.

The corporation said that by 1:30pm most of the localities had their supply restored.

As a result of the automatic load shedding following the turbine trip, there are three areas in the Bugibba, Marsascala and Msierah localities that have to be switched on manually.

"Enemalta engineers are already on their way, and supply is expected to be restored shortly," the Corporation added.
