Country needs to strengthen its moral fibre – Archbishop

Archbishop Paul Cremona calls for concerted effort by the government to strengthen country’s moral fibre.

Archbishop Paul Cremona today called on the government to set up an entity to strengthen society's moral fibre.

In his sermon held during Pontifical Mass to celebrate Malta's Independence, Cremona asked whether "the country's moral fibre had improved or gone backward?" since gaining Independence in 1964.

"What efforts are being made to strengthen the moral fibre, the social values of the country, justice, honesty and solidarity?"

Society stands to lose when the moral fibre is weak, the Archbishop said, adding that "the lack of a moral conscience paves the way for theft, fraud, deception, tax evasion and injustice, to the detriment of all."

"I want to make a proposal today. What about a State entity, such as parliamentary secretariat in one of the ministries, that is created to strengthen this moral fibre? This work may be part of the educational system, as it already is, however this is only reaching students. We need to reach adults and society as a whole. We could create a social plan that reaches everyone, young and old. We could also make use of the social media," Cremona said.

In his sermon, Cremona pointed out that since gaining Independence in 1964 and become a Republic and attaining Freedom in later years,  "Malta not only become free, but the responsibilities in running the country have also increased."
