Illum speaks to the wife of prison convict Melchior Spiteri

As a child in Bormla, Edwina knew Melchior Spiteri as a fearsome 12-year-old with a criminal pedigree. Then, she married him while in prison.

In an exclusive interview with sister newspaper Illum, the wife of prison convict Melchior Spiteri, Edwina, 39, describes how she met the prison convict – serving 14 years for the murder of a loan shark – in Paceville.

She talks about the lack of attention the courts and the correctional authorities have given to the institutionalised life of Melchior Spiteri, who first appeared in front of a court of law at the age of 9.

“Prison is hard… I ask, what is there inside prison that reforms people? Why isn’t there no help programme? Do you think a man like Melchior, who has 12 years to serve in prison, has no need of help?”

Edwina Spiteri also reveals that a request by Melchior Spiteri to take bible study with an evangelical Born Again Christian movement, was never accepted.

Now i am New Born Christian got baptized 12th june 2010 at Qawra in the cold sea. How come in prinson they do not let him read the bible. Melchoir God is with you. I do go to our church not the catholic Church. Melchoir i am ready and speak to you if the authorites let me in or else something as to be done . God is with you.

I've read today the Newspaper Illum and read about Mechoir Spiteri who is serving prison for 14years. For that i am sorry about what has he done and he has to serve there. Edwina got married to Melchoir or she loved him or were friends. She said to take the bible and read it as Born Christian Again if i read well he was not allowed. Why? I am in Born Christian Again i got baptized again on the 12th june of the year. I believe in God only. Wish to visit Melchoir i do not know him personally but if his wife wants as a group we can go and speak to Melchoir. Melchoir what u done its true its wrong but God is with you. God knows what u have done but he is helping you as myself passed and still passing if it was not god is helping me or i am dead or i did a suicide.Why the authorities dont let him read the bibile as his wife is saying? Pls let him read then bible. The bible its a real bible not what the church when we were youngt as a child they thell us what to read. Melchoir i will be parying for u and to your wife. I will support u Melchoir what u done is done but when u leave from there u will baptized again as i did. God Bless you Melchoir
