Newly-elected Labour MP to run for European elections
Labour to field first-ever Maltese Muslim for European Parliament elections
The newly-elected Labour MP Deborah Schembri, who in 2011 fronted the divorce movement that secured a victory in a referendum to pass Malta's divorce law, will run for the European Parliament elections.
Three new candidates on the PL ticket for the European elections will include sitting MP Deborah Schembri, a Muslim community representative Mario Farrugia Borg, and economist and university lecturer Fleur Vella.
The candidates were approved by Labour's executive committee.
Borg, 43, is married, and hails from Qormi, and works in the Prime Minister's secretariat. He studied at the Vassalli Lyceum and the Gan Frangisk Abela Lyceum. He is a member of the Labour national executive.
Vella, 35, from Naxxar, works as a maarketing manager and was formerly an official in the finance ministry. She lectures in economics at the University of Malta.
Schembri, 37, from St Paul Bay's, was elected to parliament in 2013. She was a student leader at university in the Christian-democratic league SDM, and is currently also fronting the Anti-Cyber Harassment Alliance.
