Roadworks and drainage leak leaving Xlendi in chaos

Labour MP and spokesperson for tourism Marie-Louise Coleiro-Preca confronted government’s decision to start road works in Xlendi during the summer months, which led to a huge drainage pipe leak yesterday in the popular Gozo bay.

A huge leak of drainage water flooded the Xlendi area yesterday, causing a stench and inducing shops and restaurants to close, while residents and tourists fled the area in disgust

The drainage incident combined with the road works in Xlendi’s main road are not only “distracting business in the area,” Coleiro-Preca said, but are ruining Xlendi’s environment, particularly the beach.

“In the peak of summer, because government does not have an effective plan, the main road leading to one of Gozo’s most picturesque beaches has been put under construction,” Coleiro-Preca said.

The incident happened at the height of summer when hoteliers, holiday flat owners and bars and restaurant owners are already complaining about the almost impossibility for patrons to get to Xlendi given the diversions for the closed road.
