Bormla's Dock No. 1 project in Bormla was completed yesterday, in a ceremony to mark the project that was completed using over €11 million in EU funds.

Infrastructure minister Joe Mizzi said the previous Nationalist administration had promised the completion of the project 20 years ago, but delays over planning issues had exposed the public to danger, with an elderly woman dying a month after falling over due to the sprawl of construction work on the road.

“The ministry took direct control over this project,” Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said. “Large parts of the project were completed before schedule.”

Besides the renovation of Port No. 1, these EU funds also allowed for other renovations, such as of Xatt ir-Rizq, the Married Quarters of San Nikola, Cospicua Rangers, and the Verdala housing block.

“Works on social housing at Cottonera also occurred, particularly on housing in San Gwann t’Ghuxa and in the vicinity of Santa Margerita,” Mizzi said.

“With this work and the restoration of the fortifications around it, the Government has given a clear message that the renovation of the Three Cities is of national importance,” Mizzi said. “We can now promote more tourism to the historically rich east of Malta and provide more job opportunities in various industries there.”

“This group of projects around Cotttenera have been completed, without exceeding the their budgets. We now have enough funds for works on the Gate House near the port,” Mizzi said. “Next year, Bormla’s police station will be relocated to this building.”

“Minister Mizzi’s commitment to finish this project on time reflects the government’s commitment to continue investing and beautifying the south of Malta,” parliamentary secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg said.
