The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has condemned the actions of protestors who harassed journalists during a protest on Sunday.

A journalist and cameraperson were reporting on the protest, organized by the Ghaqda Patrijotti Maltin, when an individual shoved them repeatedly.

The demonstrator was later arrested.

“The IGM unreservedly condemns this behavior, which threatened the freedom of the journalists to carry out their work,” the Institute said in a statement.

“We welcome the police’s swift action in arresting the individual and urge the authorities to pursue the case within the full extent of the law.

“Disrupting journalists is tantamount to disrupting freedom of the press, which is against Maltese law.”

The IGM reiterated its call for a police officer to be assigned specifically to members of the media during such events, who would also serve as a point of reference.
