Toni Abela was subject to an intense grilling yesterday, as MEPs in the budgetary control committee asked difficult questions about his past and his suitability for a role in the EU Court of Auditors. The committee's recommendation to reject Abela's nomination will now go to the European Parliament, where the final vote will be taken.

Inland Revenue Commissioner Marvin Gaerty said that prosecution of defaulting tax payers was rare, with cases often being settled amicably without the need to involve the courts.
