Emergency nurses union slams health minister

The emergency nurses union has slammed health minister Joe Cassar for not inviting them to attend a press conference he gave at the end of a visit to the emergency department at Mater Dei Hospital.

The press conference was held in the wake of an emergency situation faced by the hospital with hundreds of flu patients seeking treatment for complications.

In a statement, the nurses union expressed disappointment at the Minister’s choice not to invite it to the press conference when another union was present.

While reiterating that the emergency nurses union represents the majority of nurses who work in the department, the union reminded minister Cassar that as a union it had raised the alarm on the situation and called for urgent meetings in a bid to find solutions to the crisis that was developing.

‘Although the situation has slightly improved, there still is a substantial number of patients waiting to be given a bed, adding that at least 30 patients were still being kept in a corridor between areas 1 and 2 of the Emergency Department.

The union has reiterated its call to Minister Cassar to hold urgent talks on the situation.
