Milk price increases to be "investigated" – Said

The recent price increases on milk will be investigated by the consumer authority to determine if these were “justified or not”, says Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Competition Chris Said.

Recently, Benna upped its prices on certain milk products, while leaving others as they are. Skimmed milk prices were actually decreased. When it announced the price increases, Malta Dairy Products Ltd justified them due to similar increases in price of animal feed.

Said announced the investigation during press conference with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech following a Malta Economics and Social Development Council meeting convened with urgency following significant gas and fuel price increases.

Said, announced that the recent milk price hikes will be investigated by the Competition Authority as “the operator could be enjoying a dominant position in the market.”
