Malta International Airport sees 9.5% air traffic increase during August

During August, passenger movements through the Malta International Airport reached 759,547, an increase of 9.5% over the same month last year

The Malta International Airport (MIA) has continued an upward trend during August, with passenger movements reaching 759,547. 

This translated into an increase of 9.5% over the same month last year. 

During the August holiday rush, the airport was registering a daily average of 24,502 passengers. 

Aircraft movements also registered an increase, with over 5,000 take-offs and landings during the month, A 9.7% increase when compared to last year. 

The countries with the highest percentage of traffic were the United Kingdom with an increase of 12.1% over the previous year, Italy with a 16.2% increase and France with a 2.5% increase. 

The fastest growing market is currently Spain, with a 30% increase over the previous year, a noteworthy performance that can be credited to the fact that Spanish routes have seen an increase of flights to Bilbao, Malaga and Seville. 

1,536 tonnes of cargo and mail passed through the airport during August.
