Christchurch rocked by three earthquakes
Three strong earthquakes strike Christchurch, New Zealand. The city had already suffered enormous damages after a strong earthquake in February 2011.
181 people were killed when the last earthquake struck Christchurch in February.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the first 5.8-magnitude quake at about 16 miles east-northeast of Christchurch. A second quake was reported at the same location and followed a series of strong aftershocks that included a 5.3-magnitude tremor. There was no tsunami warning issued after either earthquake.
One person was hurt but there were no reports of large-scale damage. It has been reported that electricity and telecommunications services have been disrupted in some areas.
These quakes come 10 months after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake destroyed large parts of the city. A total of 181 people were killed and caused up to NZ$20bn (€11.8bn) in economic losses.
