Beijing’s veto of a UN resolution to condemn Syria’s crackdown on anti-government protesters was defended by Chinese state-run media.

The Western attempts to change the regime in Syria was criticised by China’s leading newspapers and made reference to campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

The veto by China and Russia over the weekend of the UN resolution was described as a mockery by the US.

Mortar bombs were being dropped steadily on Sunday as government troops in Syria continued to attack the city of Homs.

Local officials said that burials were being conducted at night due to the danger posed by snipers during the day.

The London-based campaign group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death of at least 28 civilians at the hands of security forces across Syria on Sunday.

Since the uprising began in March, more than 7,000 people have been killed by Syrian security forces according to human rights groups and activists.

The Syrian government said that at least 2,000 members of the security forces were killed after fighting armed rebel forces.
