Bahrain F1 race in jeopardy as protests ensue
Formula One race in Bahrain in jeopardy as anti-government protesters threaten the safety of participants and their mechanics.
Security has been tightened by authorities in Bahrain before practice sessions for Sunday’s Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Three days of ‘rage’ were pledged by anti-government protesters to overlap the event.
Force India team members had to escape from petrol bombs which were thrown near their car on Wednesday as they returned from the track.
The fate of the race is considered uncertain amidst escalating unrest and violence with four mechanics in a 4x4 getting caught in the middle of an incident as police forces clashed with protesters.
The FIA, the Formula 1’s governing body chose to go ahead with race scheduled for this weekend while two members of the team were asked to return home.
UK’s Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper called for the Grand Prix to be cancelled.
She said it should not go ahead and British drivers should refrain from participating while calling on the Formula One to not proceed with the race in Bahrain.
