Podium finish for Maltese Riders in Sicily

The last Minimoto race of the F.M.I. - Sicilia Championship with Maltese participants was held on Sunday 7th October at Kartdromo Triscina in Trapani - Sicily.

Young Maltese Minimoto rider Glenn Schembri went to battle the final championship race with and advantage of 12 points over the Sicilian rider Danilo Sapienza.

Glenn Schembri, Dylan Cauchi and Ryan Faenza though tired from the long journey, they started their training sessions and making bike adjustments for this newer track under the guidance of Frans Schembri on Friday afternoon. Their long drive from Pozzallo to Triscina did not help much butthey managed to find their initial optimum settings for a good next day start.

Unfortunately for the Maltese team they could not continue their testing and bike settings on Saturday as the day was full of bad weather and heavy rain. This was a major disadvantage compared to the other Sicilian drivers since Kartodromo Triscina is their own home track.

The pole position was held early morning on Sunday when it had stopped raining. Danilo Sapienza made the best lap time followed by Dylan Cauchi and Glenn Schembri. Rider Ryan Faenza made the 5th best time in the time allocated for the Pole Position.

The race started at 3.00 pm as scheduled. Glenn and Dylan immediately took the lead, with Danilo Sapienza and Paolo Bentivegna following the Maltese riders.  It was difficult for Glenn Schembri to hold his advantage and unfortunately in the 6th lap Glenn lost control of his bike and fell.  Soon it was a continuous battle between Dylan and Danilo for the first place, with Dylan holding his position in first place till the last lap when Danilo surpassed him and won the race. Thus Dylan finished in second, Ryan
qualified in third, Glenn finished in fouth and another Maltese Dion Farrugia fell in the last lap and retired from the race.

This resulted in Glenn Schembri winning an equal total number of overall points as Danilo Sapienza. This resulted in the Championship being awarded to Sapienza and Glenn Schembri is the Runner-up as Sapienza had an advantage of three wins against Glenn's 2 wins.

Dylan won 2nd place on the day and 3rd Overall with Ryan Faenza in 4th place Overall in the F.M.I. 2012 Minimoto Sicily Championship. This was a great result for the Maltese riders as it was their first time of racing in a foreign championship. Race Licences were possible by the intervention of Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi - Malta who represents FMI and UEM in Malta.
