Island Karting Club's Daily Fresh Bakery Cup

An action packed Sunday, with excellent competition and thrills for all spectators and drivers. The Island Karting Club held their second competitive event of the season that was proudly sponsored by the Daily Fresh Bakery director Mr. Paul Cassar.

A busy day started by official practice sessions and warm ups, with drivers testing new tires for the rest of the season. Safety scrutinising and drivers briefing s where held just before pole position that started at 4:00 pm.

Pole was a tense moment as all 8 drivers rolled out.

During the pole position the timing system kept rotating from driver to driver as they exchanged best laps. The 10 minute session ended and the official results came in.

Pole:

3^rd  Jurgen Debatista   

4^th Clayton Laus

5^th Jamie Mangion 

6^th  Neville Zammit

7^th Paul Cassar             

8^th Terence Laus (DNS) did not start.

Pole was won by Adrian Cauchi after a very close session all drivers where within a second from first to 7^th.

Heat one was up and the Race Director gave the starting orders.

As all karts completed the warm up lap the start signal was launched and the race was on.

Adrian Cauchi took a good lead with driver s behind exchanging places.

After lap 3 Cauchi had a problem and was forced to slow down, keeping the lead after lap 5 he was forced to retire leaving him with (DNF) did not finish. Rookie driver Jurgen Debatista

was able to take the lead with Clayton Laus close behind. An epic race was on the go behind the front runners with Paul Cassar, Jamie Mangion , Joseph Mifsud and Neville Zammit all tightly together. Laus was able to pass Debatista and also Cassar closed in, Zammit had to retire with 3 laps remaining leaving the backfield apart. The action was till the finish as Paul Cassar and Clayton Laus left no breath between them, a remarkable photo finish was to be seen Laus claimed the race victory by 0.021 of a second.

A short break was held and another drivers briefing before heat 2 commenced.

Heat 2 was the last and probably the most thrilled race of the day.

As the race started a close pack of drivers exchange passes and manoeuvres but coming into the half of lap one Neville Zammit made a late break move that caused him into a spin and making contact into Paul Cassar also leaving Zammit out with a DNF. Debatista and Cauchi took the advantage and went up to 2^nd and 3^rd respectively.  The race continued as the drivers chased onto each other. Cauchi was able to pass Debatista and chased down behind Clayton Laus. Cassar continued the race but tried to catch the other drivers by cutting the circuit many times as this breached regulations Cassar was black flagged and disqualified.

An extreme ending was inevitable as Cauchi took a move on Laus and gained the lead of the race, with both karts neck at neck no room was allowed for a mistake with Jamie Mangion gaining hard on both karts also. Half a lap to go and a brilliant late break move by Laus caught Cauchi by surprise to take the lead. As the finish flag raised another photo finish was in the making as Laus won by 0.129 of a second.
