No one was injured when a car was gutted by fire this morning in St John’s Street Valletta.

The incident occurred at around 10:05am, when the vehicle’s driver, a deliveryman, was out distributing goods to a nearby shop. Upon returning to his vehicle, the driver is said to have seen smoke coming out of the car’s engine.

The driver then called for help nearby, while passers-by called the Civil Protection Department. Despite CPD personnel arriving within minutes, it was all in vain, as the car – a Fiat Tempra - caught fire in a matter of seconds.

The driver escaped unharmed, while no injuries or reports of smoke inhalation were reported.

Initial investigations suggest that the car had an engine fault, while the driver is said to have lost approximately €400 in goods The fire also damaged a facade and a door of the law courts.

Police have ruled out arson.

Sergeant Brandon Borg, and Inspector Daryl Borg led the investigations.
