October 2012 registers increase in gainfully occupied

Persons registered as employed on full-time basis in October 2012 increased by 1.4 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2011.

Data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation indicates that over a period of one year, the labour supply increased by 2,588 persons, to 159,514. This was mainly attributed to an increase of 2,113 persons in the gainfully occupied population and an increase of 475 registering as unemployed, when compared to the previous year.

According to the National Statistics Office, year-on-year increases in full-time employment were mostly recorded within the Administrative and Support Service Activities while an increase of 412 persons was registered in Human Health and Social Work Activities.

Construction and Manufacturing experienced drops in full-time employment of 268 and 248 persons respectively.

During the period under review employment within the private sector increased by 2.1 per cent, or 2,336 persons, when compared to October 2011. The highest increase was recorded within the Administrative and Support Services Activities. A year-on-year decline of 0.5 per cent was recorded in public sector employment with the highest decrease within the Transportation and Storage Sector.

When compared to October 2011, female employment increased by 3.8 per cent, reaching 52,952 persons. The largest proportions of women were employed in Education and Human Health and Social Work Activities.

Over a one-year period, the number of full-time employees rose by 1.5 per cent, with the highest increase recorded in the Administrative and Support Services Activities. During the same period, full-time employment in Construction dropped by 3.0 per cent. When compared to October 2011, full-time entrepreneurship went up by 0.7 per cent.

Part-time employment in October 2012 amounted to 55,325 persons - an increase of 5.5 per cent or 2,868 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2011. The most significant increase in part-time employment was registered in Accommodation and Food Service activities, at 7.9 per cent.

The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job increased by 3.8 per cent when compared to 2011 levels, reaching 23,518 persons. The largest increase was recorded among females at 8.3 per cent. The number of persons who had a part-time job as their main employment went up by 6.8 per cent with the highest increase being recorded among females.
