Evidence shows drivers were racing before fatal collision

Court says there is enough evidence to indict the accused

CCTV cameras showed how Ayrton D’Amato Quintano, 19 of Hamrun, driving a Jaguar, was racing Sean Borg, also from Hamrun, who drives a BMW, when his car hit a pick-up truck at high speed, killing the driver.

The tragedy occurred at Triq l-Ingieret near Ghammieri Farm on the afternoon of September 21. D’Amato Quintano overtook Borg in his Jaguar and collided with a Mitsubishi pick-up truck being driven by Filomeno Bonavia, 55 of Mosta. The truck overturned and Bonavia was thrown from the cabin, killing him instantly. Both cars were extensively damaged.

Borg told the police he drove on because he was afraid of the consequences.

D'Amato Quintano is being accused of involuntary homicide, driving recklessly and at speed.

After hearing the evidence through prosecution Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona said that there is enough evidence to indict the accused.

Dr Franco Debono and Dr. Marion Camilleri were defence counsel while Alessia Zammit McKeon was parte-civile for the Boanvia family. Prosecution was led by Inspector Spiridione Zammit.

The case continues on 14 April.
