Multiple bail breaches could cost man €13,600

A man stands to lose €13600 in bail guarantees after he was arraigned for threatening police officers whilst on bail for other offences.

31 year old Steven Farrugia from Cospicua appeared in the dock before magistrate Josette Demicoli this afternoon, accused of threatening two police officers, as well as harassing, insulting and threatening a third party. He was also charged with breaching two sets of bail conditions, one of which was secured by a €10,000 personal guarantee and the other by a €3000 personal guarantee and a deposit of €600.

The incident with the police happened on 6 November at the detox centre in Pieta, three days after the alleged harassment and threatening of the other man.

Police Inspector Kylie Borg explained that Farrugia had been arrested upon leaving Mount Carmel Hospital, after a short stay where he had checked himself in voluntarily. A warrant for his arrest had been issued over the breach of bail and the threats, she said.

Lawyer Noel Cutajar, appearing as legal aid to the accused, entered a plea of not guilty. Farrugia was remanded in custody.
