President to help prevent Floriana 'extinction'

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca launched a forum aimed primarily at finding ways to boost Floriana's continuously shrinking population.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca launched a forum primarily aimed at finding ways to boost Floriana’s population.

“Floriana is a small town whose population is continuously decreasing, so much so that there exists a concern that it might one day become extinct, ” Coleiro Preca said. “I will act as a catalyst to help encourage people, particularly young people, to settle down in this town.”

The forum is led by the President and includes representatives from organisations based in Floriana, including its local council, Vilhena Band Club, and Floriana Football Club.

“A lot of foreigners are interested in living in Floriana,” Floriana’s mayor Nigel Holland said. “I see this as good news as they can integrate and help sustain Floriana’s economy.”

“The final aim of this project is for it to serve as a pilot project for other localities,” Floriana’s vice-mayor Matthew Paris said. “Floriana is not the only locality in Malta that is faced with the problems caused by a shrinking population after all."
