Threatening letters to Italian consumers posted from Malta

Last Wednesday, 19 October, Malta featured on popular Italian programme Striscia la Noticia on Canale 5 regarding threat letters sent to Italian consumers from Malta.

Journalist Moreno Morello spoke to a number of consumers who complained of receiving letters threatening legal action after watching programmes that were available from a website ‘free of charge’.

The website – www.easy-download.info - offers programmes for a limited period of time and others free of charge.

Morello also spoke to the General Secretary of the National Consumer’s Union Massimiliano Dona, who explained that the company originated in Germany, though was being operated from Slovenia. However the letters threatening legal action originated in Malta.

Dona said that because the consumer did not sign an official contract, these letters can be ignored.

The Maltese Police told l-Orizzont that no complaints have occurred in Malta and because the complaints did not originate in Malta no investigations could be commenced. They also said that employing an agent in Malta to collect money does not constitute breaking of any laws.
