Church calls on politicians not to attend events in illegal establishment

The Church's commission for the environment is calling on politicians not to give their blessing to illegal establishments by attending charity events in illegal establishments.

The Church Environment Comission is appealing to politicians and all those holding public office not to participate in events, including those held for charitable purposes, held in sites which have lack a legal planning permit.

This proposal was among a number of proposals insprired by Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si.

"In the absence of this, those who attend these activities would be giving their blessing and promote businesses which are making a profit from illegalities and who are unfairly competing with businesses which abide to the law."

The Church's commission warning is a clear warning against the participation of politicians in activities held in establishment in breach of the law, some of which like Montekristo have hosted charity events like l-Istrina in the past. Candidates of both major parties have also held their own fundraising activities in this establishment in the past.

The document also calls on politicians not to breach planning laws themselves and to lead by example.
