Cirkewwa victim’s family receive €379,767 compensation

Over the past 20 years, Maltese Courts have awarded almost €2.5 million in compensation to families who suffered untimely bereavement.

Weekly newspaper Illum looks into some of the more notable pay-outs that Maltese courts have made to families of crime victims. Among the cases investigated is that in January 2000, where three workers died from toxic fumes while working in Cirkewwa.

Drainage Department employees Charles Camenzuli, Carmelo Ciappara, and Joseph Vella Parnis were working on a pumping station valve, Illum reports, when gas started leaking around t hem.

The workers were not working protective masks, and began breathing in contaminated gas, resulting in their dead, according to autopsies on the men’s corpses.
