Bed problem still unresolved, says ENU
The Emergency Nurses’ Union (ENU) said even though several meetings have taken place, the problem of lack of beds at Mater Dei hospital still persists.
In its statement John Zammit, President of the ENU, said nurses at the Emergency Department were annoyed that patients and their relatives were taking their anger out on them, when it was not the ENU’s and its members’ fault there were no beds in the hall.
“Nurses have to inform the patients they will either be staying in Area 2 or on stretchers in the corridors for a number of hours, at times even days,” Zammit said.
“But one must keep in mind that it is not the nurses’ decision to place the patients in these areas, but it is a hospital’s problem,” he stressed.
Zammit recalled that several meetings have taken place with a number of persons, including Health Minister Joe Cassar, but the problem remains unresolved.
The ENU also called onto the patients and their relatives to cooperate with the nurses. “If there are any complaints, one should make them to the Customer Care at Mater Dei or to the Health Ministry,” Zammit informed.
