Marsa crowned Champions

On Saturday the MCA Cricket Summer league continued where the two top teams, Marsa C.C and Melita C.C battled it out. Unfortunately it was a small battle where the Marsa team were dominant in every department

The Melita team batted first and were in deep trouble early losing their openers for five runs. Both were captured by Tony Azzopardi. Matt McKeogh set about trying to restore stability in the line up, he was Frank Spiteri's first wicket of three. McKeogh made twenty one runs. Chris Riordan made thirteen runs. Andy Naudi was Melitas shining star scoring forty one runs from thirty balls which included four fours and a six. Apart from that the Melita tail Enders fell apart and were bowled out for 107 runs. For Marsa other wicket takers were Ronnie Sacco with three wickets and Waseem Abbas with two.

The Marsa reply was relatively calm, Frank Spiteri opened and made thirty three runs before being lbw. Zubair Raja made seven runs, Haroon Majeed made twenty eight runs. Ronnie Sacco (twenty one runs) and Waseem Abbas (sixteen runs) saw the Marsa team to victory, not only for the game but for the Summer League title. With still four games to be played the Marsa team have won all their games and have one game to play. Well done Marsa C.C.

On the previous Wednesday the Marsa team played the third game against the Australian side , Cricketers Club of New South Wales. The Marsa team looking for a whitewash.

The NSW team batted first, and with fine performances from M.Gale (fifty runs), G.Brooks (thirty two runs) and L.Neil (thirty runs), they totalled a reasonable score of 171 runs from their forty overs. Kevin Krishna,Joe Gartner and Gordon Hewitt were the main wicket takers for Marsa with two each. The Marsa team were thinking that the white wash was there for the taking.

Fine bowling from C.Palmer (three wickets), S.McCullum and D Burns (two wickets each) and a wicket to G.Brooks,L.Neil and A.Brooks demolished the Marsa team and bowled them out for 119 runs. Nowell Khosla stood out by making forty four runs while Sean Byrne chipped in with twenty runs. The Marsa team still won the series two to one.

After the game the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation , Youth and Sport, Dr Stefan Buontempo made the presentations.

Next Saturday the Summer league continues with Krishna C.C playing Overseas C.C.
