Murray crashes out to Monaco

Murray survived a scare in beating Feliciano Lopez in the first round, but he could not overcome some similarly fitful play against Monaco.

The world No. 4 made a poor start to the contest, as he struggled to find his range on serve and was broken in the first game. Monaco grasped his chance and after saving three break points in the sixth game, he went on to break again and claim the opening set at a canter.

Murray won just 11 points on serve in the opening set and it got no better at the beginning of the second as Monaco broke again. But, with defeat staring him firmly in the face, he hit back and broke twice in as many games to force a decider.

The Brit's serve continued to cause him problems and Monaco grabbed a vital break of serve in the fourth game of the final set. Unlike in the second set, Monaco did not surrender his advantage at the first time of asking and a love service hold tightened his grip on the contest.

Monaco is without a tournament win to his name in 2010 but he did not falter with victory over the No. 1 seed in sight as he won 16 of the 18 points on his own serve and hammered home his superiority by breaking again to close out victory.

Gael Monfils is in fine form following his win at the Open Sud de France and he required just 66 minutes to claim a 6-3 6-3 win over Eduardo Schwank. The No. 8 seed will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round.
