Hungarian due to stand trial for stabbing partner to death to be extradited

58-year-old man charged with the murder of his partner in 2012 to be extradited to Hungary once criminal proceedings and possible sentence are served out.

A 58-year-old man due to stand trial by jury for stabbing his partner to death in St Paul’s Bay is to be extradited to Hungary after a court upheld a police’s request.

The request was made this afternoon by Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri who told the court that a European Arrest Warrant was issued against Hungarian national Laszla Nandor Marton who is wanted in his homeland for his role in a fight in 2010.

The extradition request was acceded to by Marton, and no objections were filed.

Marton, 58, of Budapest, Hungary, is currently being charged with the murder of his partner, Yvette Gajda, in 2012.

While upholding the prosecution’s extradition request, Magistrate Gabriella Vella informed the accused that an extradition request cannot be appealed or revoked, and that he would be held in police custody pending his extradition.

Moreover, the court underlined that notwithstanding Marton’s extradition request, he would first have to undergo his pending criminal proceedings against him, and if found guilty, he must also serve his punishment.

Marton, 58, of Budapest, Hungary, is currently facing murder charges after he allegedly stabbed his partner 40 times with a scissors in an apartment in St Paul’s Bay, on 27 November 2012.

He is pleading not guilty to the charges, and has since been placed under a bill of indictment and is due to stand trial.

The victim, mother-of-two Yvette Gajda died to the multiple stab wounds that left her unable to pump enough blood to the heart due to severe blood loss.

The alleged murder is said to have been carried out after an argument erupted between the accused and the victim. At one point, the victim is said to have grabbed a pair of scissors that were lying on a bed nearby and Marton then snatched the scissors from her and stabbed her on her head, neck, shoulders, and back.

Marton was arrested at the scene of the crime bearing a number of self-inflicted wounds.

Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted, while Magistrate Gabriella Vella presided.
