Fgura man charged with attacking his mother

Court grants bail to 36-year-old charged with slightly injuring his mother

A man accused of having slightly injured his mother in a family row on Tuesday, was released on bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Inspector Jeffrey Scicluna arraigned the 36-year-old man from Fgura before Magistrate Charmaine Galea on Wednesday, accusing him of causing slight injuries to the woman and relapsing.

The court was told how the incident occurred at around 1:30pm, at the mother’s home in Floriana.

The accused, whose identity cannot be revealed due to the nature of the case, pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mario Spiteri, requested bail, pointing out that the accused had two young children to provide for.

Scicluna argued against releasing the accused from custody, telling the court that the man had been arrested and charged with similar offences against a former partner in the past.

In addition, the close family ties led to a risk of contamination of evidence, the inspector submitted.

Taking into account the circumstances surrounding the case, the court granted the man bail against a deposit of €200 and a personal guarantee of €2,000, ordering him to sign the bail book twice a week, not to speak to his mother and prohibiting him from passing through the street where she lives.
