Man admits to throwing plate at partner, grievously injuring her

British holiday maker granted bail, after his partner ended up with her eye bruised and stitches to her face after he threw at plate at her

A British holidaymaker is on bail awaiting sentencing after he admitted to grievously injuring his partner with a plate in a hotel room argument.

Anthony Field, 34, of Lowestoft, appeared before magistrate Audrey Demicoli this morning. Inspector Godwin Scerri charged the man with grievous bodily harm and insulting the woman. Field was also charged with wilful damage to third party property and negligently causing damage when a suitcase he had thrown from the balcony landed on a Renault van parked outside.

Present in the courtroom this morning was the man’s partner, her left eye bruised and with stitches to her face. She is understood to have been injured when Field allegedly threw a plate at her, whilst drunk.

Field pleaded guilty to the charges.

Lawyer Yanika Camilleri, legal aid to the accused, and the police inspector approached bench to discuss the case privately with the magistrate.

When the sitting resumed, both prosecution and defence told the court that a suspended sentence would be ideal. The man had been very drunk at the time of the incident, said the inspector, but had cooperated fully with the police. He was willing to pay for all of the damage he had caused, Inspector Scerri added.

Noting that the man had caused some €392 worth of damages to the hotel and €118 to the vehicle on which the suitcase had landed, the court adjourned the case to Tuesday until the man paid the victims.

He was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €2000 and was ordered to observe a curfew. A protection order was issued in favour of the woman.
