‘Electoral promises must be fulfilled’ - GWU

The General Workers Union pledges to be vigilant over a new administration so that electoral promises are fulfilled.

The General Workers' Union said that it would be vigilant so that the new administration that will be elected on 9 March will be held to its pre-electoral promises.

The GWU said it is making this declaration to avert the situation that transpired following the 2008 election, where the Nationalist Party made several electoral pledges which were then not implemented by the current administration.

"The GWU will not accept that what happened before the last election repeats itself," the union said in a statement.

The union noted that in the run up to the 2008 election, various categories of workers were given assurances that their jobs would be safe, "only for the opposite to happen later, with the consequence that many of these workers not only found no reassurance, but even lost their jobs."

The GWU said that among these workers who lost their jobs despite assurances to the contrary were employees at Air Malta, Dry Docks, Go, and those who worked with the public transport system.

"This was after they were sent a personalized letter from the head of the Nationalist Party who promised them that their jobs would be safe," the union said.

The union went on to declare that "from this very moment, we are ready to be vigilant so that the promises made will be seen through, and also to ensure that workers are not deceived once again, as was done in the outgoing legislature."

The union also appealed to the population, especially workers, pensioners, youth and families, to perform their democratic duty on 9 March and vote in their best interests and that of the country.
