Government's finance management displays incompetence - Muscat
Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat says that the government can be judged by its lack of financial management and increased debt resulting from money from EU funds wasted on failed projects.
During a meeting in Gozo, Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat said this morning that the government’s finances were not being controlled wisely and the government could be judged by the increased debt and deficit and the lack of financial importance given to the value of land.
Speaking on Smart City, Muscat said that the EU Commission itself said the Maltese government “says a lot, has a lot of good plans but does not deliver”.
Thousands of jobs were promised at Smart City by the government according to Muscat, but due to disputes between the government and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, progress has been restricted and the project would fail to provide the employment promised.
“Every mistake adds up financially and the government should take responsibility for the millions of euros wasted on unrealised promises and projects which could have been used help families by reducing water and electricity bills,” Muscat said.
Muscat also said that the value of family is central and they would look toward the private sector to provide stable and certain employment which was promised but “not provided by the present government”.
“We will be clear with the private sector and give it stability and certainty. The Labour Party will not just make promises but will act on what we say and provide employment,” Muscat said.
The Opposition Leader also said that they will be invested in keeping Gozo’s characteristics which makes it attractive to potential investors to provide sustainable work with decent wages.
“Work will be provided so that people can keep their families and build their futures in Gozo. We are not interested in a past which separates, but in a future which connects us all,” Muscatsaid.
Muscat said that any Gozitan who wants to build a future in Gozo should be given the opportunity and stressed that bureaucracy will be removed for Gozitans to reach their goals for their future.
“We are promising work for Gozitans in Gozo. We see Gozo as the motor of the country’s economic sector. The best policy we can provide for the island is to provide a future for Gozitans here,” Muscat said.
