Slight increase in average June temperature

June in Malta was slightly warmer and brighter than the norm, despite having cool weather during the first six days.

According to the Meteorological Office, the average temperature stood at 24.3°C, which is 0.4°C more than the climate norm. The highest temperature peaked at 32.8°C on June 12th, while the lowest temperature recorded was 16.4°C on the 1st and 5th days of the month.

Malta saw a total of 339 hours of bright sunshine, which tallied to a total of 0.3 hours more than the average.

The brightest days were recorded on the 19th and 21st, each enjoying a total of 13.3 hours of sunshine. Meanwhile, the dullest day fell on the 17th, which saw only 1.2 hours. On average the islands were covered by 11.3 hours of sunshine a day.

The average sea temperature was 22.0°C, which is 0.5°C warmer the norm for June. The relative humidity was 62 per cent, 6 per cent lower than the climate norm of 68 per cent.

For most of the month, the wind blew in Northwest direction at a mean speed of 7.9 knots. The maximum wind gust of 33 knots was recorded from the East by North direction on June 2nd.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms were only heard on the 1st and the 17th days of the month. Rainfall measured at the Malta International Airport was 2.2 mm, which was 4.0mm below the average for June. No fog was registered.

The warmest June goes back to the year 2003, when the mean temperature stood at 26.1°C. The highest temperature ever recorded was on June 13th, 1997 when thermometers rose to a high 40.1°C. The coolest night since 1947 was registered on in 1975 with a temperature of 12.6 °C.
