Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has said that one major problem in closing down the zoo at Montekristo was that all the animals would have to be killed, something he said was not being considered at all.

Muscat was replying to questions from MaltaToday as to whether the government was responsible for having allowed the zoo to operate without being licensed, in the aftermath of an accident in which a tiger on a leash lashed out a 3-year-old boy last week causing him grievious injuries.

"As part of the action being taken, the government already presented a case in court against the zoo owners," Muscat said.

Muscat said the government had already started a consultation process for the setting up of a new law about zoos and to tackle similar incidents as the one that happened in the Montekristo.
