Labour presents motion on energy costs

Opposition presents parliamentary motion on price of utilities

Labour whip Joe Mizzi presented a parliamentary motion Tuesday morning, demanding an energy benefit to cover the recent rise in energy costs after the Prime Minister extended an increased honorarium to ministers and MPs.

The motion calls on the Malta Resources Authority to publish its working and reports, and also its sources, with respect to the recent approval on changes in the price of gas, both past and present.

“The Opposition wants the MRA to review its methodology and adopt a more realistic mechanism that is both fair to operators and that defends consumers’ interests,” Mizzi said.

The motion also calls for discussions between government and all stakeholders to look into the creation of a method that introduces price stability on gas, to help families facilitate household budgeting.

Labour is also proposing a new parliamentary committee chaired by the Speaker of the House and composed of three members from both sides, to investigate all decisions taken on privatisation of national assets.

The Malta Resources Authority announced the official January maximum prices for LPG and propane gas per cylinder - 11-15% higher than before - as Easygas announce marginally cheaper rates. In its announcement, the Authority said all distributors are obliged to sell LPG at the prices established by Liquigas (Malta) Ltd and or Easygas (Malta) Ltd, provided that the authority’s official prices are not exceeded (See prices here).
