Taxpayers Charter formally launched
Finance Minister Tonio Fenech this morning launched the ‘Taxpayers Charter’ which aims to provide a qualitative and efficient coordination between taxation departments and the community.
The ‘Taxpayers Charter’ was launched during an international conference that is being held in Malta by the Institute of Taxation.
Tonio Fenech stressed on the importance that the service provided to all taxpayes is “just and efficient, however it also must be tough with those who try to avoid their obligation to the detriment of others who abide by the law.”
The Charter was promised in the Budget speech for 2010 and was subject to lengthy discussions with a number of institutions and organisations.
The main aim of the Charter is to reduce bureaucracy and increase the country’s competitiveness.
Minister Fenech stressed that Malta enjoys one of the lowest taxation rates in all the EU, whereby government’s income from income tax is only 34.7% of Gross Domestic Product, while the average is 37% in the EU.
