Graffiti – ‘Malta should clearly condemn Gaddafi’

Malta worked towards providing millions of euros for Gaddafi regime – Moviment Graffitti

Moviment Graffitti today said Malta had worked for agreements with the Libyan government worth millions of euros in aid for the Gaddafi regime. After participating in the protest organised by Libyan residents in Malta earlier today, Gaddafi said the Maltese government had “never voiced a single word on the abysmal human rights situation in Libya.”

Spokesperson Chris Mizzi said the group expressed its full solidarity with all those who are currently fighting for democracy and for the just distribution of resources. “The courage shown by these persons heavily contrasts with the policies being implemented by Europe and the United States who are supporting, both materially and politically, these dictators in North Africa and the Middle East. The case of Libya is just another sad example of this anti-democratic behavior,” he said.

Mizzi said Malta had refrained from taking a clear stand condemning the Gaddafi regime while its leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi was carrying out of massacres against his own people. “A shameful position has also been taken by the Labour Party, where after days of silence, it ‘condemned all forms of violence’ without stating that Gaddafi is to blame for the violence happening now. Is it possible that one fails to take a clear stand when faced with a situation where people are being massacred just because they are fighting for democracy and social justice?”

Mizzi said it was easy to congratulate the people fighting for democracy and equality, when the dictators they had toppled are the same ones that were supported by the states now praising the protestors. Graffitti also said it was making an appeal to everyone to show concern on the situation of refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa who are currently in Libya and who are now facing a serious threat to their lives.

“Unfortunately, after Gaddafi brought in mercenaries from Africa to shoot Libyans, some people began to hunt down African immigrants and kill them. Refugees have nothing to do with mercenaries but have found themselves caught in the middle of this conflict. “We appeal to the Libyans in Malta to spread the word in Libya that the refugees have nothing to do with mercenaries and that, like the Libyans, even they have suffered huge injustices under Gaddafi.”
