Customs seize more than €190,000 in undeclared cash

The passenger was stopped by customs officials as he was boarding a flight to Istanbul

A man has been detained after he was found to be carrying more than €190,000 in undeclared.

In a statement, the customs department said the man, who holds a Maltese passport but resides in Manchester, was stopped as he was boarding a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

He was taken to the Customs Office and following a thorough personal search and a search of his belongings, officials discovered bundles of undeclared cash in his checked-in luggage which had been offloaded from the plane.

A total sum of €200,192 was found, of which €10,000 - the legal limite - was returned to the passenger with the rest being seized by Customs.

The Police Anti-Money Laundering Squad was alerted, and the passenger was placed under arrest.

He is to be arraigned in court later today.
