A hijacker who seized a ferry close to Istanbul’s coast was shot dead by Turkish security forces yesterday.
After 12 hours of being held hostage by the hijacker who claimed to have a bomb, officials said that all 24 passengers and crew were safe.
The hijacker was believed to have been a member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has been banned in Istanbul.
The decision to storm the vessel at dawn with a joint security forces operation was taken at 05:35 yesterday morning.
Istanbul governor Husevin Avni Mutlu said that shortly after the anti-terrorist commandos boarded the ferry, the attacker was killed.
