At least 17 people were killed in Myanmar and dozens more were injured early this morning when an explosion to place at a warehouse in the south-Asian country.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined but officials ruled out the possibility of a bomb.

Witness saw several buildings engulfed by flames within the medical warehouse compound and 50 wooden homes were destroyed.

Four firefighters were among the 17 dead and 30 firemen were among the 79 injured during the battle to subdue the flames.

The fire was successfully extinguished early in the morning after approximately four hours of dousing and rescue workers frantically searched the rubble for survivors and carried out young children to safety.

Around 900 people were left homeless according to officials and seven other warehouses were totally destroyed.
